I’m about to reach my 38th birthday, a time of anxiety and depression for me. I have complicated things about January 27th, and I would rather not dwell on them. Instead, I want to focus on something positive. Let’s discuss what a game-changer Ko-Fi can be.
So, my goal is to reach 38 subscribers on Ko-fi at $1 a month each, by January 27th. I think we can do it.
Ko-Fi
Ko-Fi is a website that allows me to take payment for commissions and subscriptions for the work I already do. I’ve never liked a paywall, and I doubt I’ll ever go that route. Everything I make is distributed for free, to reach the largest audience possible. While that’s great for getting people to read what I make, it is terrible for business.
So, Ko-Fi is a way to support me as a creator who is pretty much making everything I create free, to begin with. All you need to do is visit my Ko-Fi page and set up a recurring monthly subscription of $1 a month to help me with the costs of production, such as web hosting and domain renewals.
I am aiming to recruit 38 members of my audience supporting my myriad of works at $1 each, month-to-month. This is a huge deal. Just this month I had to kill a project I had on the backburner because I could not afford the domain renewal. I have the material archived, but the domain is gone.
Full disclosure, my wife has been unemployed since early 2024, and we are living off my teaching earnings and whatever I make freelancing. I don’t want to focus on the dire aspect of this. This is about the work I already do and how you can support that.
But what do you get?
Well, to be honest, if you follow my comics, fiction, essays, or podcasts, you’re already getting everything I offer. Beyond that, at best I can promise to upload material on Ko-Fi early for supporters as often as I can. But given the complexity of production and my schedule, I can’t promise early access as a thing consistently. You’d be surprised how often things are uploaded just as soon as they are finished.
This subscription drive is just helping support me for the work I am already doing.
But, why don’t we talk about all the cool stuff I am already doing that your $1 a day can help support?
Projects
I have been publishing a lot of cool stuff over the years, and since revamping my site, that’s only increased. Here is the lay of the land as far as everything I am already posting online, for free. A great deal of this material is also weekly.
Comics and Art
My main thing for years has been comics and they continue to be my primary focus when it comes to what I do. As it stands, right now, I have four comics you can check out.
Cosmic Dash is a long-running science fiction webcomic that I have been working on for years now. The series follows a crew of aliens on a ship in the Silver Spiral Galaxy as they contend with exploration, discovery, and a colonial cold war.
Ko-Fi subscribers even get early access pages!
The series also features an extensive collection of lore, which can be read on the Silver Spiral Stories website.
The galaxy of Cosmic Dash became so large with concurrent stories that I ended up developing a spinoff series called Silver Spiral Stories that explores side characters and the larger setting through mini-comics. The Orthos one-shot is particularly well-loved by readers.
On top of that, the extensive prose collection can be found on the website as well.
RGBots is a comedy comic strip that updates a couple of times a week. The comic features three robots who are awful to each other.
The comic also features an adorable papercraft style and consists of hundreds of strips. There is no shortage of stuff you read, here.
My latest and perhaps wildest comic project yet, Steamboat Sailor Brawl! is an exploration of open culture and the public domain.
The comic is about Popeye and Mickey Mouse engaged in a lengthy brawl and updates a couple of times a week.
Who knows what will happen?
Even more?
That’s not all though. My archives are full of projects that pop up on the website, such as my cyberpunk dystopia comic, Executor (now Freelancer). I have also started a series of strips called hpkomix that I have been sneakily hiding on the website to be discovered.
Even more comic projects are waiting in the wings. And that doesn’t even include the ongoing sketchbook series here on the site or The Shmoofy Experiment.
But I’m not just known for my comics, either. What else does your Ko-Fi subscription support?
Fiction
I am obsessed with writing and write a lot. Written work occupies the majority of what I do here on hpkomics.com. Your Ko-Fi subscription helps fuel my passion for writing, knowing an audience is there.
Among the writing I love best is fiction, and there is a lot of great fiction that continues to arrive. I love short stories and flashes, and wouldn’t you know, we have several.
And there is way more on the way. But if you want extended, ongoing fiction, there is also Fang of Triseria. It is a long-form, serialized werewolf adventure in a dark fantasy world.
Other ongoing fiction series are on the way, and you can also check out the Cosmic Dash novella, Pause & Effect.
Essays
Essay writing is another thing I love to do. Whether it is critical theory or reviews, I have my niches, but I also love to tackle new material all the time. I have a particular passion for horror in all forms in addition to comics. I also would like to begin publishing material about literature and education as well. Your support of $1 a month through Ko-Fi can help make that a reality.
Here is a selection of great essays so far:

Along those lines, you can also check out the podcast material I produce. I am a co-host, writer, and researcher on Supernatural Selection, and I am writing about making episodes. If you want to make your podcasts, it can be a great resource.
I also am a cast member of the Dungeons and Dragons actual-play podcast, Spooky Dice Bag, and have started the “Scrolls of Noctis,” an in-character journal recapping events.
Between three shows (including The Distraction Hole), I am helping to provide over 20 hours of audio a month, alongside my co-hosts and fellow cast members. Please consider supporting the shows. However, you can also help support my work, including everything we’ve discussed so far, on Ko-Fi for $1 a month.
Please Consider Supporting My Creations
If you’ve made it this far, I know that you are considering supporting the work I do. $1 a month is not a large ask, even in today’s economy. We’re also all spoiled for choice in where to pour our entertainment money.
However, consider that your patronage is an important part of the creation of culture. Creators like me struggle to produce work as quickly and as often as we can. The reality of working, surviving, and creating is challenging, to say the least.
You can help me to continue writing, drawing, and yapping about all the cool stuff I have already been doing, and it costs less than 1 soda a month.
So please, consider supporting the work I do by subscribing monthly on Ko-Fi.
Thank you.
