Yep, drew Shal Noctis again – my TTRPG character.

Shal is still very much around in Spooky Dice Bag, and a lot has emerged with the character over the past couple of months. Unfortunately I haven’t had the opportunity to update The Scrolls of Noctis in a bit, but once the semester is over I plan on catching up. Shal’s been through some shit and there has been a lot of wild stuff with the character I want to share his perspective on.

Shal has been a fun character to play, for sure. But he is also a fun character to draw. He is one of my favorite characters I’ve created in the past couple of years for sure.

It has been nice to have some time to do some illustrations over the Thanksgiving break. Drawing this character is a pretty nice way to wrap it all up. But anyway, back to the grindstone tomorrow.

His Spooky Dicebag appearances begin next week, and I have something planned for that. It required a drawing of Shal, so here we are. Sometimes I just base characters on gimmicks or mashups. Whatever seems fun. Looking at this guy, you might be able to see which characters I am referencing.

So, my latest TTRPG character, Ash the Merc is based on three characters.

• Guts from Berserk
• Ash Williams from Evil Dead
• Link for The Legend of Zelda (Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom)

Ash the Merc is a wandering fighter who specializes in fighting monsters. I’ve talked to my DM about him perhaps becoming a monster himself. We’ll see how the campaign plays out.

The TTRPG campaign is based on the horror setting developed by GooeyCube, called Zyathé. If you’ve played D&D modules like Ravenloft you’re in the ballpark of the horror setting we’ve been exploring.

My previous TTRPG character, Shal Noctis, ended up being a lot of fun. So much so that he’s quickly integrated himself into my fiction and he’ll be showing up in my Triseria setting. I expect much the same for Ash, here. My lead monster may need a rival.

I figured I would draw him since I have been drawing other RPG characters I have. It made sense to draw him as a Vault Boy. I am a big fan of the Fallout series. We even recorded an episode of the podcast about the way the series references cryptids and aliens. It’s a fun listen. Just click the episode cover below.

My Sunday night group recently finished a campaign involving strangers from the Wasteland being “abducted by Aliens” (which turned out to be a Vault-Tec experiment).

My character, Initiate Merf (“Spelled like it sounds.”) was ostensibly a Brotherhood of Steel initiate. He was played as a zealot and made constant claims of claiming technology in Vault 113 for “the Brotherhood.”

Turns out that he was a liar. Merf was just a former member of the Cult of Mothman who came out of the Appalachias and managed to steal a BoS jumpsuit off a corpse in a BoS raid gone wrong. Now he’s in the Capital Wasteland looking to join them as a lost chapter member.

I played Merf as a twitchy, fast-talking, chem-addicted survivor who was pragmatic in a lot of ways. Some campaign highlights include:

• Carved a crude version of the BoS logo on a “UFO” for later retrieval.
• Played “Trick or Treat” with another survivor and managed to convince them to give Merf all their chems.
• Arranged a kill box to take out an entire group of Rust Devils.
• Managed to have The Mysterious Stranger appear during several firefights.
• Exploded several raiders with critical hits.
• Dismembered a Raider with a critical strike with a Mr. Handy Buzzblade while hopped up on Fury.

Anyway, that’s a little bit about my time with the Fallout TTRPG. It’s a ton of fun.

More Lower Decks fun. Also, the Ferengi are a lot of fun to draw. I appreciate the dirty sense of humor in the design with the piercings, as the earlobes are canonically erogenous zones for the species.

Kilara of Cerix is part of the underground Ferengi feminist movement and was smuggled off the world of Ferenginar. She grew up with an interest in Starfleet and currently works in Cetacean Ops. She also has some sort of history with Quark and hopes to take down his business aboard Deep Space Nine one day.

And that is what we know so far from Session Zero. We’ll see where her story goes, alongside Ryder Dai. Perhaps other members of the team will appear as well in the sketchbook. We are both absurdly into Star Trek and pepper in a lot of Trekkie references day-to-day. It was fun to surprise her with a drawing of her character.

I am a huge fan of Lower Decks, When my Sunday monthly group decided to run Star Trek Adventures for a while, I was immediately thrilled we were doing something akin to Lower Decks. I may write a bit about the campaign or write Starfleet Ensign Ryder Dai’s tragic backstory (it involves an accidental centaur) and how it dovetails into the creation of the “Dai Saddle,” one of his chief contributions to Starfleet.

As for the Starfleet Equestrian Division, I noticed that there were a lot of horses in Star Trek, so I decided to play on that. In a broader sense, he is the “animal handler” and has some skills with xenobiology and animal husbandry. Also, he hails from Corpus Christi, Texas, and was kind of peer-pressured into the Starfleet Equestrian Division due to his family’s ranch.

Drawing in the Lower Decks style is a ton of fun. As you can see, I have also included my original drawing of the character that I did on my character sheet. It was done from memory at the time. I realize a lot of details are off with the uniform, but it still very much feels like Star Trek.

As of now, there are probably three versions of him. There is a version for a Wednesday night group, the original, based on an undead race presented in a GooeyCube module. There is also a version that is developing as a character with some ties to Fang of Triseria.

The last version is something I cannot talk about just yet, but it’s going to be an exciting development.

Anyway, for those interested, in 5E he would be an Open Hand Monk. The generalized backstory is that an incident wiped out his monastery several centuries ago. He woke up as an undead but was trapped within the ruins for a few hundred years, only getting out fairly recently. Shal Noctis is a bit touched and speaks to himself frequently. He may not be the only presence in this corpse.
