The sketchbook update today is a little more raw, even compared to the simple inking job I took on the other day. This is a look at how I work on ideas, and I rarely show these sorts of things off. But, then again, I mean, this is a sketchbook, so why can’t I post some less polished stuff?

Anyway, I have been sitting on a three-issue miniseries treatment for a Giallo comic about a series of murders revolving around a student art show. I keep floating different titles as seen in my notes on the illustration. One thing I like to do when developing ideas is to dip into images. I am fortunate that I can write a draw, so sometimes I create a logo for something to encapsulate what I hope to achieve with the project.

As for Giallo, I am specifically referencing the Giallo cinema of Italy of the 60s and 70s. A lot of classic posters for these films used heavy yellow coloration, as Giallo is also Italian for yellow. Yellow was the color chosen for the imported cover prints of crime and horror comics in Italy. Mussolini had sought to prevent the publication of these types of books, but when his regime fell, there was a resurgence of the genre, and many directors were inspired by these books to make their own Giallo films.

I can probably write a lot about Giallo in general, as I am a fan of the genre. I can also talk about the comic idea I have, but that might be best handled in dedicated posts another time.
